An engineered retaining wall holds back soil, water and load for decades without complaint. We design timber pole, concrete block and reinforced concrete retaining walls across East Auckland and New Zealand-wide, and prepare the calculations and consent documentation that councils require.
When does a retaining wall need an engineer?
Under the Building Act, a retaining wall retaining up to 1.5 metres with no extra load behind it (no surcharge) is generally exempt from building consent. Engineering enters the picture when the wall retains more than 1.5 metres, or carries a surcharge: a driveway, building, pool or sloping ground above the wall. Those walls need specific engineering design and consent, and councils will not accept them without calculations and a PS1. Walls near boundaries, on soft ground, or supporting vehicle loads deserve engineering even when they are technically exempt, because they are the ones that fail expensively.
Timber, block or concrete: which wall is right?
Timber pole walls are the workhorse of Auckland sections: economical up to around 2 to 3 metres, quick to build, and well suited to sloped landscaping. Concrete block (masonry) walls suit tighter urban sites and tie in neatly with buildings and boundary walls. Reinforced concrete walls carry the biggest loads in the least thickness, which makes them the pick for driveways, basements and heavily surcharged boundaries. We design all three, and we will tell you honestly which one your site actually needs rather than defaulting to the most expensive option.
How much does retaining wall engineering cost?
The engineering fee tracks the wall, not the section price: height, surcharge, ground conditions (and whether a geotechnical report is needed), total wall length and site access are what move it. The wall itself is priced by your contractor, and a well-engineered design usually pays for itself by trimming over-conservative sizing from the build. Drainage: the part that actually keeps walls standing
Most retaining wall failures in Auckland are water failures, not soil failures. Every wall we design includes subsoil drainage: drainage metal, a properly falled novacoil drain and an outlet that daylights somewhere sensible. It is unglamorous, invisible after backfill, and the reason our walls stay straight through an Auckland winter.
What about the ground itself?
A retaining wall is only as good as what it stands in. For most residential walls we design from conservative published soil parameters appropriate to your area, which keeps costs down. Taller walls, soft or filled ground, and walls supporting buildings justify a geotechnical investigation, and we will tell you up front when that is genuinely needed rather than discovering it mid-project. Where a geotech report exists we design directly to its parameters, which usually sharpens the design and saves construction cost.
How the design process runs
First we look at your site: photos, plans and levels are often enough to scope and quote. Then we design the wall and its drainage, produce the drawings and calculations, and issue the PS1 for consent where one is required. During construction we inspect the critical stages, typically pole embedment or footing steel and the drainage before backfill, and close out with the PS4 your council needs. One engineer, one thread of responsibility, from first sketch to sign-off.

Fences, pools and boundaries on top of walls
Two details catch people out. A fence or barrier fixed to the top of a retaining wall adds wind and impact load the wall must be designed for, so tell your engineer about it before the design is done, not after the fence goes up. And where a wall sits on or near a boundary, the design must respect both properties: footing positions, drainage discharge and construction access all need answers your neighbour can live with. We deal with both situations weekly and design for them from the start.
